Floating the river is a longstanding Texas tradition, and the summer has always been a great time to take an RV out to the Guadalupe River. While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many tubing companies to close temporarily, the river remains open so long as we keep her safe. The Guadalupe River begins out near Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country. From there, it flows southeast for about 225 miles until it empties into the San Antonio Bay in the Gulf of Mexico.
Several RV campsites and RV resorts have made their homes along the riverbank. We’ve put together a list of some accessible campsites and attractions that offer easy access to tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.
Practicing Safety on the River
Before we begin, we want to encourage everyone to practice safety as they traverse the Texas wilds. In order to avoid spreading the virus, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind as you float.
- Social distance
- Don’t trash where you splash
- Stay home if you feel sick
- Take a river trash bag with you
- Throw it away in a yellow dumpster
- Check with lodging for river access
Kerrville-Schreiner Park
Located a few miles south of downtown Kerrville, this huge park is split into two parts. One side is on the Guadalupe River while the other runs along the south hillside of Bandera Highway.
On the riverside, you’ll find plenty of sites with full hookups for your RV rental. However, when you travel over to the hillside, you’ll only find campsites that offer 30-amp power and water. Cabins, tent sites, and a furnished ranch house are also available to visitors.
Throughout the park, you can enjoy roughly seven and a half miles of hiking and biking trails. They also have a butterfly garden and plenty of picnic areas with grills.
Guadalupe River State Park
East of Boerne you’ll find Guadalupe River, State Park. This is a popular spot for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and of course, tubing. The park also boasts over 13 miles of biking and hiking trails. They even have paths for horseback riders.
Sites in the Turkey Sink area offer electricity and water only, with nearby restrooms and showers. In the Wagon Ford walk-in tent area, primitive campers will find a place to pitch their tent.
Lake Wood Recreation Area + RV Rentals
If you continue east from New Braunfels, you’ll find a man-made lake on the Guadalupe River, Lake Wood Recreation Area. This park on the northern shore offers lake access as well as 16 back-in sites will full hookups in addition to a few pull-throughs that offer water and electricity.
Their central dock facility also allows you to launch a boat and cruise the lake. Ten minutes away, the town of Gonzales boasts some excellent restaurants and attractions. (Be sure to check ahead of time whether they’re open.)
Calhoun’s Riverside RV Retreat
About 30 miles southeast of Victoria, you’ll find Calhoun’s Riverside RV Retreat. From here, the Guadalupe River continues about 5 miles before it splits into the North and South Forks, flowing into the San Antonio Bay. At Calhoun’s, the offer RV campsites and cabins. Additionally, they have a private boat ramp for people who wish to enjoy some quiet fishing, canoeing, or kayaking.
RV Rentals to Cave Without a Name
Near Boerne, you’ll find the famed Cave Without A Name. This natural limestone cavern is the 7th longest cave in all of Texas and one of four stops on the Texas Cave Trail. You can take a walk through the six underground rooms and view draperies, stalactites, stalagmites, and rimstone dams. The tour comes to a close with an underground stretch of the Guadalupe River.
In addition to the cave tours, the property has over a mile of hiking trails, gem panning, a family scavenger hunt, and campsites and picnic tables for visitors. The RV parks at Cave Without a Name offer electric hookups and nonpotable water. Some of these sites are pull-throughs that accommodate larger motorhomes.
